The Teaching Team does not Share Responsibility for Improvement: Scenario

Teacher Bindi does not feel like her Year 4 team is actually a team. It feels like each teacher is on their own. Principal Patty outlined the School Improvement Plan at the start of the year, but it did not include applying evidence-based learnings, and the team has not talked about it since. After a mid-year mastery assessment, Bindi asks other teachers what they are doing. They brush her off. ‘We’re just delivering a program here,’ an older teacher tells her.

Bindi does not see other teachers using data to identify or apply evidence-based learnings so she stops spending time reviewing the feedback notes from her coach, or reviewing student mastery data beyond a quick glance. If this is how it’s done around here, she thinks, then she’ll just have to deliver a program too.
