Teachers do not Improve Practice or Teach to Mastery: Scenario
Teacher Jesse has not received regular coaching from Coach Mary. He was trying to deliver effective teaching, but without support from Mary, he has defaulted to his previous teaching habits to address the concerns that he sees in his classroom – lack of student engagement and inappropriate behaviour. Instead of using effective teaching techniques, Jesse uses techniques that were common at his previous school.
When his teaching partner suggests that Jesse use effective teaching techniques to address his concerns, he shrugs her off. He feels like his students’ behaviours are improving, even though he doesn’t have data to support his feeling. At the end of the year, Jesse’s teaching looks much the same as it did in the first month of school. When Mary asks him to reflect on the year, he cannot think of one example of how his teaching has improved and is frustrated with his students’ rate of learning.
