Counting On

In lesson five, students learn the count-on strategy used throughout CMC B. They get the starting number going by holding it for at least a second. For example, if the starting number is four, students first say ‘fouuur’ to get it going, then count from four at the regular counting pace.

To signal to get a number going, the teacher raises their hand with their index finger pointing up and circles it while dragging out the number.

The process is:

  • Say, ‘I’ll show you how to get numbers going. Here’s how I get four going, Fouuur. Your turn. Get four going’ and signal.
  • Repeat the steps for the remaining numbers.
  • Say, ‘I’m going to start with four and count to ten. What number will start with?’ and signal.
  • Say, ‘I’ll get four going and count to ten. Fouuur. (Tap 6) five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten’.
  • Say, ‘Your turn to start with four and count to ten. Get four going’ and signal. Say, ‘Count’ and signal (tap 6).
  • Repeat the steps for additional numbers.
