Achieving Mastery through Explicit Instruction
Writing includes four units of work for each year level from Foundation to 6. Each unit has ten lessons and is to be taught consecutively across the four school terms. The sequence and naming conventions for the units are shown in the table below:

Year Level | Term 1 | Term 2 | Term 3 | Term 4 |
F | Unit F.1 | Unit F.2 | Unit F.3 | Unit F.4 |
1 | Unit 1.1 | Unit 1.2 | Unit 1.3 | Unit 1.4 |
2 | Unit 2.1 | Unit 2.2 | Unit 2.3 | Unit 2.4 |
3 | Unit 3.1 | Unit 3.2 | Unit 3.3 | Unit 3.4 |
4 | Unit 4.1 | Unit 4.2 | Unit 4.3 | Unit 4.4 |
5 | Unit 5.1 | Unit 5.2 | Unit 5.3 | Unit 5.4 |
6 | Unit 6.1 | Unit 6.2 | Unit 6.3 | Unit 6.4 |
Slide Layer – Alignment to Reading Mastery Signature Edition
The units follow a developmentally appropriate sequence from term to term and year to year, and they are aligned to the McGraw-Hill Reading Mastery Signature Edition lessons. See the image for an example of how the RMSE lessons align to the content taught in Writing lessons. The unit can be delivered as a standalone unit, or it can be delivered in concert with the RMSE lessons.
