Pacing introduction in RMSE-LA 2

The teacher presents tasks at a reasonable pace of the middle and high performers to ensure they remain interested and to shape the behaviour of lower performers to keep up with the work.

The teacher observes average performers to determine a reasonable amount of time to complete tasks. They set the criterion for that amount of time and use a timer to communicate the expectation. Whilst students are working, the teacher praises those students who are working quickly and carefully. When the timer goes off the teacher acknowledges those students who have completed the work and sets a goal for more students to finish within the time limit the next day.

The teacher provides students who didn’t finish with a little more time or presents the next activity to the class and works later with those students.

When almost all students are able to complete the work within the time limit, the teacher sets a new goal and challenges the students to achieve it.
