Active Monitoring Procedure
Use the steps for ‘active monitoring’ when Students work independently.

Move around the classroom looking closely at Students’ work. Do not sit at a desk because feedback cannot be given from this position.

Carry a completed Independent Work Exemplar and put a ‘tick’ beside correct answers. Spend about thirty seconds with each Student.
3 |
Cluster lower-performers together for independent work to provide feedback efficiently and clarify misconceptions. Reading questions aloud before writing may help Students who are struggling with independent work. This is easier if Students are seated close together.
4 |
Show enthusiasm when Students answer correctly. Recognition motivates Students to work neatly and accurately.
5 |
Point out incorrect items and be specific; for example, say; “That one is not right, try again”.
6 |
Be sympathetic but do not stop to re-teach Students who have made errors. Individual re-teaching teaches Students that they do not have to pay attention in class and that they can rely on the Teacher’s individual help.
7 |
If three or more Students make the same error, stop the class and provide whole-group correction on that item. Correct using wording that is identical to the original item.
