Directions Exercises

‘Directions’ exercises begin in lesson five and continue through lesson sixty-two.

Directions exercises progress in the following three phases:

1
Students learn to face different directions in the classroom.

2
Students learn the code for maps (North is at the top, etc.).

3
Students engage in exercises that require them to follow instructions for getting to places on a map or creating instructions.

The process involves the following:

  • Post a card with ‘N’ on it on the North wall of the classroom, and a card with ‘S’ on it on the South wall of the classroom.
  • Lead Students through exercises to turn to face North and South while looking at the ‘N’ and ‘S’ labels.
  • Get the Students to close their eyes and point to North and South without looking.
  • At lesson eight, add signs for East and West and lead Students through activities.
  • Review all four directions in lessons nine and eleven.
  • Complete Workbook lessons with ‘directions’ exercises.

Turn to ‘RMSE-LA 2’ Teacher’s Guide, pages 43-44, lesson 8, exercise 1. Read through exercise and review teaching notes. Practice exercise 1 with your partner, working on a perky pace and clear ‘auditory signals’.
