Active Supervision Through Strategic Classroom Arrangement

Actively supervising all students increases the number of opportunities for positive behaviour reinforcement while simultaneously decreasing the chances for inappropriate behaviours. Active supervision is more easily achieved when the physical arrangement of the classroom allows the teacher to see all students in every area of the room at all times.

When classroom furniture and student seating are strategically arranged, the teacher is able to

  • circulate easily around the classroom to monitor and reinforce student engagement
  • improve proximity to students needing additional support
  • increase the probability of appropriate behaviour for students who may be off-task or easily distracted
  • correct inappropriate behaviour before it escalates, and positively reinforce expected behaviour to increase its frequency
  • increase the total number of positive teacher-to-student interactions.
