Rote Counting

Students count lines to work on addition, algebra addition and subtraction problems.

They count lines and students learn basic counting skills. The first format in the track is saying the numbers in a counting sequence. Teachers use hand-drop and auditory signals for the rote counting task.

Pay attention to when the word ‘with’ is held, ‘wiiiiith’, and when it is not. Emphasise the numbers in boldface. Count quickly, about two numbers per second.

The process is:

  • The teacher says, ‘Listen to me count. Tell me what number I end with – one, two, three, four. I ended up wiiiiith…’ and signals (hand-drop signal).
  • The teacher says, ‘One, two, three, four. What number did I end up with?’ and signals (hand-drop signal).
  • The teacher says, ‘Let’s all count and end up with four. What number are we going to end up with?’ and signals (hand-drop signal).
  • The teacher says, ‘Ending up with four, every time I clap, you count. Get ready.’ (Auditory signal.)
