Balancing Teaching Pedagogies

The Oz-e-science curriculum is designed to decrease gaps in science between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students and between girls and boys. It is a teaching approach and curriculum that balances teacher-directed instruction and inquiry-based learning. It intends to engage students with the subject, spark curiosity and wonder, and encourage them to pursue careers in science.

This is supported by the 2017 report by Mourshed, Krawitz, and Dorn, ‘How to improve students’ education outcomes: New insights for data analytics’. The report states that students who receive a blend of teacher-directed instruction and inquiry-based learning achieve the best outcomes. This balanced and well-timed strategy is called the ‘sweet spot’.
