Improving behaviour increases student

learning

When school leaders are committed to positive high-expectations for students, there is a focus on improving student behaviour to increase student learning.

Principals present behaviour data any time student improvement is discussed. This occurs in formal settings such as weekly data review meetings, and less formal settings such as an impromptu professional conversation.

Collecting Data

The principal regularly observes the teaching faculty using the Student Engagement Observations Form which assesses:

  • Physical arrangement of classroom
  • Establishment of positive expectations and rules
  • Structure and predictability through routines and procedures
  • Use of strategies and systems to acknowledge and strengthen appropriate behaviours
  • Active supervision
  • Planned effective response to misbehaviour
