Closer Look at Scoring

The teacher marks errors as students read. It is important to be familiar with what counts as an error. 
The teacher can mark each decoding mistake with an ‘X’ or refer to the How to Mark Errors for Corrective Reading handout. 
Count any of the following as errors. 

• Circle 0 to indicate a correct response to a test item.  
• Circle 1 to indicate an incorrect response. 
• On statement repetition items (for example: 9 and 11 in Part 1), circle a 1 each time you repeat the statement until the student produces a correct response. Repeat the statement no more than four times. (If the student repeats the statement the first time you say it, circle the zero.) 
• At the end of Part 1, total the 1s you have circled. Write the number of incorrect responses in the box. 
• Use the directions at the end of each part of the scoring sheet to determine if the student should be tested on the next part or if you should stop the testing.
