The Instruction Coach’s Role in Continuous Improvement
The instruction coach’s role in the leadership team and in leading continuous improvement is:
- The instruction coach provides professional technical coaching and support to the teaching team to ensure effective teaching is delivered in every classroom.
- They coordinate school-wide professional learning to ensure the teaching team receives the training and coaching they need.
- They facilitate professional learning for the teaching team and assess them on their effective teaching so they can use it towards certification and accreditation.
- The instruction coach coordinates practice sessions so teachers who have mastered practices and techniques can support their less experienced peers.

- They monitor outcomes to achievement standards through data reviews to determine what improvement patterns can be replicated and what anomalies need resolving.
- The instruction coach conducts classroom observations to ascertain which techniques or practices have been mastered and coach the teaching team on their observations, highlighting what worked well and the areas of their practice that require further development.
- They analyse data with the principal so success can be replicated and anomalies resolved. They conduct classroom observations, professional conversations and demonstrations.
- The instruction coach helps the principal to develop a culture of collegiality among the teaching team. They coordinate practice sessions for teachers who have mastered effective teaching techniques to support their less experienced peers.
