Teacher does not Understand Why Pass Assessments is Required

Teacher Ali has been tasked by her instruction coach to prepare for her lessons beforehand. Ali will often be teaching and gathering the necessary supplies needed during instruction. This has caused some behaviour issues in the classroom as well as reduced engagement and learning.

Ali oversees the theatre club and uses her planning period to prepare for the play practises after school. Her time is so stretched out between teaching and theatre practise that she has had little time to put effort in perfecting her teaching techniques. She does not understand why passing assessments is required when she is already a teacher and a pretty good one.

Instruction coach Michael is observing Ali to see if she is ‘mastery ready’ in preparing for her lessons ahead of time. He notices that she is still gathering supplies while teaching, and is stumbling on the content. Her students’ behaviours are not positively increasing at the rate he would like. He cannot recommend her to begin the process to be assessed for mastery and get certified in the area.

Since Ali only uses her target effective teaching techniques sporadically and her students have not made adequate progress, Michael recommends that she completes the appropriate practice module and sets up coaching sessions with her to track her progress more closely.
