Homogeneous Grouping Scenario

Mr. Hall has a new group of second graders that he needs to administer the RMSE 2 placement test to so he can determine the proper placement for each student. Mr. Hall explains to students that they will be working on other work he has given them while he calls each student up to his desk to take the placement test.

After giving each student part one of the placement test, he sorts through each test to see which students meet the criteria to take part two of the placement test. Mr. Hall references the placement test criteria for part one in the Teacher’s Guide. He finds that students must read part one in two minutes or less, and have five or fewer errors to take part two of the test. The student’s results from part one are listed below.

Allie – 2:05/6
Katie – 1:45/2
Ben – 1:34/9

Nate – 2:22/3
Sheri – 1:50/2
William – 1:37/4
Tyler – 2:07/1
Lisa – 1:51/8
Jennifer – 1:59/4
Jackson – 2:00/4
Sarah – 1:30/5

After reviewing the scores and placement test criteria, Mr. Hall determines that the following students need to take part two of the placement test.

Katie
Sheri
William
Jennifer
Jackson
Sarah

Mr. Hall groups the students who will be taking part two together at desks. He gives each student a copy of the placement test. Mr. Hall tells the students to track along as he reads the story. After Mr. Hall reads the story, he explains to students that they need to read each question and underline, circle or write the correct answer. The teacher explains that students have two minutes to answer all questions. Mr. Hall sets the timer and students begin working. When time is up, the teacher collects the tests and scores part two. All students made one error or less, so Mr. Hall will begin all six students in RMSE 2, lesson 1.
