Instructional Design Overview

The Expressive Writing 1–2 program uses an instructional design approach. It ensures that students are taught all the skills needed for a writing assignment with mastery.

The skills introduction is cumulative. Only a small (10–15%) amount of new information is introduced in lessons so that it is manageable on the teachers’ end and ensures students’ success.

When a new skill is taught, students are provided with extensive practise to apply it to the pre-taught content, ultimately mastering each skill and sub-skill as they move through the program.

The design allows teachers to correct students’ errors more efficiently by referring to information or skills that have been taught.
