Scenario – Effective Communication
ddewell@goodtogreatschools.org.au March 27, 2024

Scenario – Effective Communication

Step 1: Teacher, Emma, observes that her students often seem unsure about the purpose of their lessons and struggle to stay focused during instruction. She notices a lack of clarity in communicating learning objectives and inconsistently displayed behaviour standards in the classroom.

Step 2: Emma decides to address this issue by prioritising transparent communication of learning objectives at the beginning of each lesson. She begins by clearly articulating specific learning intentions and assessment outcomes to her students, empowering them to understand what is expected and how they can achieve success. Additionally, Emma creates visual aids such as posters and slides to display the objectives prominently in the classroom, ensuring constant reinforcement.

Step 4: Reflecting on the success of her communication strategy, Emma commits to embedding this practice into her daily routine. She continues to display learning objectives prominently and reinforces behaviour standards through visual cues and consistent modelling. Through intentional communication and display of objectives and routines, Emma creates a structured learning environment where students feel empowered to take ownership of their learning journey, ultimately driving towards meaningful achievement and academic success.

Step 3: Over the following weeks, Emma monitors the impact of her efforts on student engagement and comprehension. She observes that students are more focused and motivated when they have a clear understanding of the lesson objectives. By consistently communicating learning intentions, Emma notices an improvement in students’ ability to self-assess their understanding and track their progress towards mastery.
