Scenario: Coaching Self-Reflective Practices

School coach Gabrielle wants to ensure that the teachers at her school are making a habit of reflecting on their behaviour management practices in the classroom. From her experience in leading school team meetings, Gabrielle knows that there is never enough time at the end of a meeting (nor are the teachers focused enough) to complete an effective reflection activity.

For this new school year, Gabrielle decides to take advantage of the ‘settling’ time at the start of weekly school team meetings for teachers to do some self-reflecting.

Gabrielle notes that teachers can complete the survey in less than two minutes and during this time the group settles down and gets to business more quickly. She also has a weekly data set that she can review to check in on how each teacher is doing and feeling about behaviour management in their classroom. Within weeks, this simple self-reflection survey becomes a successful and useful routine at Gabrielle’s meetings.

She uses a digital survey platform that provides a QR code, which teachers can easily scan with their mobile phones or tablets as they settle in before the meeting begins. Each survey has three quick-click questions and one question that provides a space for teachers to write in a response if they prefer.
