RMSE 2–3 Placement Test Specifics

Students are placement tested before beginning instruction to determine their rate, accuracy and comprehension performance.

The process is:

• Copy the blackline master of the placement test from the RMSE 2 or RMSE 3 Teacher’s Guide.
• Test each student on part one individually.
• The teacher reviews the vocabulary words with student, this part is not scored.
• The teacher times the student and keeps track of errors as the passage is read aloud. Time requirements are specified in the Teacher’s Guide.
• The teacher conducts part two of the test as a group test for student who met rate and accuracy criteria on part one.
• For RMSE 2 the teacher rereads the story to students before they begin written questions. For RMSE 3 the teacher does not reread the story.
• The teacher times students as they write answers to comprehension questions about the passage.
• The teacher uses the placement criteria provided in the Teacher’s Guide to determine placement for each student.
