Auditory Signal

Teachers use an auditory signal when students are focusing on their text book or workbook. This allows students to hear the signal even though they are not looking at the teacher. Below are steps the teacher follows when using an audible signal.

  • Give direction – ‘Find column 4.’ The teacher scans to make sure all students are touching column 4.
  • Focus – ‘Word 1.’ The teacher checks that all students are on the first word before beginning.
  • Think time – The teacher pauses two seconds to give students think time.
  • Cue – ‘What word?’
  • Interval – The teacher pauses one second.
  • Signal – The teacher gives an audible signal. An audible signal can be a snap, clap, or tap. The signal needs to be clear, consistent and loud enough for students to hear.
