Scenario: Strategy in Action, The Sandwich Method
Bernard August 13, 2024

Scenario: Strategy in Action, The Sandwich Method

Instructional Coach Jamie and teacher Wendy are about to begin a post-observation meeting. Jamie needs to communicate with Wendy about a pacing concern she had with her instructional delivery. In past meetings, Wendy has exhibited signs of insecurity when receiving feedback. Jamie knows she needs to choose a communication method that will get the message across in a positive and non-threatening manner so Wendy will be more receptive to his suggestions.

Instructional Coach Jamie employs ‘The Sandwich Method’ in her conversation with teacher Wendy. She begins by complimenting Wendy on the positive aspects of the lesson that she observed. From here, she brings up the pacing concern to her by using a matter-of-fact tone and data-based points to get the message across. She follows this up with another piece of praise.

Teacher Wendy is appreciative of the praise and communicates that she too has noticed an issue with the pacing of her instructional delivery. Instructional Coach Jamie suggests strategies to improve this area of her teaching. Wendy is receptive to these changes and agrees to start implementing them the following day.

Instructional Coach Jamie reobserves Wendy the following week and notices that she has applied the changes they discussed in their meeting. It is evident ‘The Sandwich Method’ of feedback delivery was successful and Instructional Coach Jamie decides to use this structure more frequently in her professional conversations.
