Scenario: Priority Improvement Issue Resolution in Action

Introduction
During a classroom observation of Teacher Jake’s classroom, Instruction Coach Maggie notices two anomalies in Jake’s classroom management. First, his students take too long to transition to the next location. This results in Jake needing to individually address behaviours among specific students and ultimately losing instructional time. The second is that Jake is not adequately using signals. The first issue has a higher priority, so Maggie decides to focus on that.

Review
In a post-observation meeting, Maggie communicates her findings to Jake. Jake agrees that transitions are an area in need of improvement for him.

Resolve
Maggie gives Jake advice on how to apply a countdown strategy to motivate students to transition more quickly to the next activity. Maggie offers to demonstrate this strategy and introduce the method to Jake’s students.

Reinspire
After Maggie introduces the countdown strategy to Jake’s students, she revisits his classroom and notices significant improvement in the transitions occurring in Jake’s classroom since he started implementing the countdown strategy.
