Teacher Uses a New Routine to Maximise Lesson Time

Teacher Uses a New Routine to Maximise Lesson Time
Before the start of the school year, teacher Jesse has spent time thinking about which areas of the classroom routine might be most disruptive, based on his knowledge of behaviours from last year. He knows that lining-up is always challenge, so he begins to teach his new class a ‘line-up routine’.
He starts by identifying what might be challenging.
‘Okay everyone, time for the line-up routine.’
He explicitly teaches the correct response using action-oriented and positive language.

‘Remember to put your chairs on top of your desks and wait quietly to be called.’
He ends with positive expectations that connect to the school wide values.
‘I can’t wait to see all the safe students putting up their chairs and respectfully staying quiet until they are called!’
One student, Hannah, always struggles with the line-up routine, so when Jesse sees her making the right choices, he doesn’t hesitate to use specific, positive feedback:
‘I see that Hannah remembers the line-up routine. She’s put up her chair, walked to her line spot and now has her hands at her sides. Way to be a role model for safety in our classroom, Hannah!’
