Teacher Ties Classroom Rules and Routines to School-Wide Values
Teacher Karl uses his Whole Group Lesson time rules and routines to communicate a positive message to students and parents about success at school. He uses the school-wide values as a basis for his classroom rules and routines to give the students a sense of community. This provides a structure for students to engage and for teachers to teach and recognise.
The school wide values are:
- We are responsible.
- We are respectful.
- We are learners.
- We work hard.

His classroom rules and routines are developed using the OMPUAA guidelines.
- Observable: behaviours that can be seen, heard, and felt.
- Measurable: the occurrence of the behaviour can be counted.
- Positively-stated: so students understand what is expected of them to be successful.
- Understandable: written in age-appropriate, student-friendly language.
- Always applicable: to be used every time and without exception.
- Aligned: to school-wide values.
We are responsible. | We are respectful. | We are learners. | We work hard. | |
Whole group lesson | Keep our hands and feet to ourselves. Sit tall in our seats. | Track the teacher. Listen to the teacher. Allow others to learn. | Use whole body listening. Answer on signal. | Keep trying until we master a skill. Ignore distractions. Learn from our mistakes. |
