The Students Do Not Understand What Is Expected of Them at School
When teachers do not explicitly teach rules and routines, students do not have structure or predictability, which means they cannot focus on their learning. Students are not clear on what is expected of them at school and the learning environment is disorganised and chaotic with behaviour issues. Students cannot focus all their energy on their learning.
The Problem is Compounded
The teacher/teaching assistant:
- does not establish predictable patterns and activities for students to follow
- does not consistently promote rules and routines using school-wide language so that communication around expectations is universal across the school
- does not positively reinforce values, routines and rules or motivate students to follow the expectations
- does not provide opportunities to practice and review rules and routines after long breaks to remind students of the expectations
- does not use prompting or pre-correcting to set their students up for behavioural success.
