Lesson Time is Not Maximised
When the teaching team does not explicitly teach school values, expected behaviours, rules and routines, students do not know what is expected of them or how to do activities and tasks. This does not establish predictable patterns and activities for smooth operations of the classroom which means that teaching and learning time is not maximised.
The Problem is Compounded
The teacher/teaching assistant:
- does not ensure that routines for participating in lessons, transitioning, and working independently are explicitly taught and reinforced daily
- does not establish routines for frequent (daily, or multiple times daily) classroom activities. Teachers do not have routines designed for the most problematic areas and times
- does not display posters showing the steps to each routine in the areas of the classroom where that routine is most relevant
- does not embed classroom rules and routines by explicitly teaching the steps to each routine, prompting students to follow routines, and positively reinforcing those students that follow routines
- does not use specific, positive feedback by giving a description of the steps that are being performed correctly, and how following this routine ties into the school-wide values around behaviour.
