Scenario: Lack of Instruction for Students
- Step 1: The school team has established a school wide behaviour plan, identifying inappropriate behaviours and the resulting corrective responses and consequences.
- Step 2: Teacher Cassandra does not take the time at the start of term to instruct her students about the expected routines and behaviours. However, she still expects the students to follow them.
- Step 3: During class one day, student Max is surprised when Cassandra sends him to time-out to rethink his behaviour. He doesn’t know what he did that was inappropriate. When she initiates a conversation before he returns to class, Max remains insistent and frustrated that he doesn’t know what he did, and Cassandra thinks he’s being defiant and considers additional consequences.
- Step 4: Max and the other students are unsure what to expect in Cassandra’s class. As a result, they are more likely to behave poorly, and their learning time is frequently interrupted.
