Step 1: Teacher Anthony is aware of the school wide behaviour plan in use at the school where he teaches. He knows what behaviours are considered inappropriate.
Step 2: While he is aware of the variety of consequences included in the plan, he tends to use verbal redirection almost exclusively. He did not notice early signs of student behaviour shifting, but when he did see inappropriate behaviour taking place, he would stop the class to remind students what was expected.
Step 3: With no other consequences being used, the students learned to ignore what Anthony said to them. The resulting increase in poor behaviour meant that Anthony was interrupting the learning more and more often.
Step 4: As a result, Anthony struggled to get through the lessons in the standard time, and the students fell behind in meeting their learning targets.
