A Culture of Continuous Improvement and Communication is Not Promoted

A Culture of Continuous Improvement and Communication is Not Promoted
Step 1: A behaviour plan has been enacted for Tommy. Tommy has been struggling to finish tasks promptly. This behaviour interfered with Tommy’s self-confidence. Tommy’s teacher knew enacting this plan would be challenging for her because she did not yet have the tools or knowledge to do so.
Step 2: Unfortunately, Tommy’s teacher does not consistently enact the behaviour plan for a variety of reasons. At times, Tommy’s teacher implements the interventions, but not exactly as they are laid out in the behaviour plan. She often forgets to provide the accommodations or to track behaviour with the student until the very end of the day. This makes the plan feel like an afterthought.
Step 3: At the next review meeting, Tommy’s teacher reports that his behaviour has not improved. The team inquires if the behaviour plan has been enacted with fidelity. She admits that she often forgets to implement the plan and that Tommy has stopped taking the plan seriously as a result.
Step 4: In this situation, neither Tommy nor his teacher have developed a continuous improvement mindset. Tommy’s problem behaviours become more prevalent, and the plan becomes less of a priority to both him and the teacher. The validity and importance of the plan have been undermined and it will be more challenging to get Tommy back on the right track.
