Behaviour Plans Lead to More Productive Learning Environments

Step 1:  Student Kyle’s behaviour was becoming a major distraction to his classmates. A behaviour plan was put into place for him with a simple procedure for his teacher, Maya, to follow when Kyle presented with challenging behaviours such as utilising the Zen Den or connecting with his mentor.

Step 2: Maya becomes very preoccupied with the hustle and bustle of the day and does not consistently enact Kyle’s behaviour plan. To save time, she will often resort to using punitive techniques or sending Kyle out of the room altogether.

Step 3: When Maya must stop her teaching to address the misbehaviour that Kyle exhibits, the other students in her class lose valuable instruction time. When Kyle is sent out of the room, he is also missing the instruction time needed to make academic progress. When Kyle’s misbehaviour is addressed in a punitive way, he becomes even less engaged in the learning that is happening.

Step 4: If Maya had been enacting the behaviour plan with fidelity, Kyle would have learned positive coping strategies for regulating his emotions. He would not have missed out on valuable learning experiences. The rest of the class would not have their learning time interrupted as frequently, and Maya would have more time to spend on teaching.
