Scenario: Start the Year Strong to Entrench Values, Rules and Routines
Step 1: Prior to the start of the school year, Principal, Daniel, makes plans for the positive high-expectations intensive that will kick off the school year.
Step 2: Daniel works with the school team to develop the vision, mission, practices, rules and routines that will guide their expectations throughout the school year. He creates a plan for the first week of school that involves all school team members and students in activities that will ensure students know what appropriate behaviour at school looks like. He makes sure the planned activities take place as scheduled.
Step 3: To ensure that the practices are being carried out correctly, Daniel visits each teacher’s classroom regularly and provides feedback on their practice. He also regularly walks the school’s shared spaces, including the hallways and the playground, to make sure the values, rules and routines are being followed and student behaviour is being supported.
Step 4: Consistent implementation of positive high-expectations practices throughout the school supports teachers in improving their practice and makes it easier for students to know what is expected, no matter where they are in the school. Use of the practices and student behaviour improves.
