Teachers are not Practising Adequately to
Improve their Practice: Example
Damian (teacher) had a busy weekend and did not find time to practice his lessons for the week. As he is teaching maths, he has to pay close attention to the script, as this is unfamiliar content. He pauses to read ahead to figure out what the next step is. He is figuring out the signals to use and when he needs the board display. He is also concentrating on correcting the errors the right way. Damian provides affirmations when they show up in the script but is not able to add any additional affirmations.
He is using all his concentration on delivering the new lesson, and does not have the capacity to remember to add praise when students are displaying appropriate behaviours or working hard on a new skill. There are a few students behaving inappropriately, which he addresses. Damian does not make it through the lesson that day.
