The School Leaders and Professional Learning

In the zone of Professional Learning, the school leaders:

  • actively lead and engage in professional learning
  • develop the annual Professional Learning Plan
  • track teaching teams’ learning progression
  • hold professional learning conversations
  • conduct regular classroom observations.

Introduction

When reviewing the Weekly Data Review Report, Markus (instruction coach) and Deborah (principal) identify that a teacher called Susan is effectively delivering classroom transitions. However, her student engagement levels are below 90 per cent during an engagement observation.

Review

Markus is tasked to resolve this anomaly with Susan. He provides feedback on what is working well before discussing the sub-optimal engagement levels. Markus offers advice and assigns Susan the Use Engagement Techniques module as training. She completes the module that week and puts her newly learnt skills into practice.

Resolve

Deborah completes engagement observations the following week. She observes Susan’s progress and her more vigorous use of engagement techniques. She notes that student engagement is reaching its target of 90 per cent during the observation.

Reinspire

Markus schedules an assessment later that term, so Susan has had a lot of time to practise. He observes that the teacher is now mastering the engagement techniques. Markus provides an accreditation to Susan and shares her success with other staff in that week’s staff meeting.
