The School Leaders and Data-Driven Improvement

In the zone of Data Driven Improvement, the school leaders:

  • collect, analyse and action teaching and learning data
  • develop the annual School Improvement Plan
  • promote data visibility on School Data Walls
  • conduct regular School Data Reviews
  • use data to identify trends and progress towards targets.

Introduction

Arthur (principal) and Katie (instruction coach) develop the annual School Improvement Plan. During the meeting, they review last year’s data to identify patterns, trends and areas of improvement. They develop targets using the goals achieved and missed in the most recent School Improvement Plan. For example, the school leaders set a goal to achieve 95 per cent attendance across the school by the end of term.

Review

Throughout the term, Arthur and Katie conduct weekly School Data Reviews. They monitor which classrooms achieve their attendance target and which classrooms require additional support with parent engagement. During the weekly team meeting, the school leaders encourage the teaching team to share insights and strategies for improvement surrounding the attendance levels. The leaders also celebrate classrooms that are achieving their attendance target during the meeting.

Resolve

Arthur and Katie continue to monitor and provide support to teachers and families around the attendance target. The school leaders meet with parents to align the community around the school’s attendance goal. Katie sets up and updates the School Data Wall to motivate the school community towards its shared attendance goal. She regularly updates the wall with the school’s progress towards targets and highlights classrooms that are achieving their attendance target week-on-week.

Reinspire

At the end of the term, Arthur and Katie review the data to confirm the school achieved its attendance target. Acknowledging the collective effort required to achieve this goal, the school leaders invite teachers, teaching assistants, students, parents and community members to participate in a school celebration. During the celebration, the school leaders share the school’s attendance achievement and celebrate the target achieved with a parent parade.
