The School Leaders and Peer Collegiality
ddewell@goodtogreatschools.org.au August 7, 2023

The School Leaders and Peer Collegiality
In the zone of Peer Collegiality, the school leaders:
- embed a culture of professional conversations across the school
- encourage the teaching team to participate in professional conversations
- schedule professional conversations on the school calendar
- organise and participate in peer networks with other schools
- lead weekly Lesson Practice for the teaching team.

Introduction
Michelle (principal) organises a forum for Tony (instruction coach) to meet and discuss their school’s improvement actions with a network of principals and coaches from other schools. At the forum, Tony seeks peer guidance in addressing low community engagement levels.

Review
During the forum, each participant discusses parent and community engagement in their school. Through this process, the school leaders and their peers identify potential causes for low engagement, such as limited community engagement events or no social media communication between the school and the wider community.

Resolve
Each coach and principal shares improvement actions that have enhanced community engagement at their schools. The peers discuss several actions including collaborating with community organisations, creating and distributing a weekly newsletter and the importance of hosting a forum to draw up a compact with the community. Tony records the interventions.

Reinspire
By participating in the peer network, Michelle and Tony identify strategies to improve their community engagement levels. The leaders develop several actions, including hosting a forum with community leaders to draw up the compact and creating a stronger social media presence for the school to engage with the community virtually. They share these actions with the school team in the next weekly meeting.
