Determining the Focus for

Coaching Sessions

The instruction coach uses data from the weekly data review, professional learning plans, MTP assessments and observations to determine the focus for the coaching sessions, including teaching techniques, classroom management, professional learning or a combination of all three.

1. Introduction

During the weekly data review, the instruction coach, Lisa, noticed that students in three separate groups are not meeting mastery on their independent work.

2. Review

Lisa does a classroom observation of those three groups to determine why students are not meeting mastery. She finds that several teachers are not following the correction procedure every time an error is made.

4. Re-inspire

Lisa schedules follow-up observations to determine if the teachers are now using the correction procedure for every error made. She also watches the weekly data to see if students are mastering their independent work.

3. Resolve

Lisa demonstrates the correction procedure at the beginning of the weekly practice session for the teachers to practise while they are working in teams. Lisa pairs a teacher who uses the correction procedure with fidelity with another teacher who is not using it with fidelity. In addition, Lisa has teachers review this technique by completing Practice Module: Use Correction Procedure.
