Coaching Peer Collegiality in the School

The instruction coach supports peer collegiality in the school through the cycle of School Professional Conversations.

Through professional conversations, the teaching team builds its practice collaboratively and shares learnings between less experienced and more experienced team members.

The instruction coach organises professional conversations and ensures all team members are supported to participate. The school calendar sets out what discussions will take place, the focus of the conversation and who should attend.

1. Introduction

The instruction coach Matt creates a schedule for School Professional Conversations at the beginning of the year. According to schedule, Matt and the principal Luke host a Weekly Data Review where the school leaders review school data and identify targets the school achieved and missed that week.

2. Review

During a Weekly Data Review, Matt and Luke identify the top teaching and student successes of the week. The leaders highlight a classroom that achieved 100 per cent attendance last week after missing the attendance target for two weeks prior.

3. Resolve

Matt and Luke announce the positive data in the weekly staff meeting to celebrate the classroom’s success.

4. Reinspire

The leaders discuss the challenges of achieving these results and open the discussion to the teaching team on the strategies used to achieve this target. The teaching team formulates the learnings from the conversation and summarises potential applications in their own classrooms.
