Coaching Peer Collegiality in the Classroom

The instruction coach supports peer collegiality in the classroom through the cycle of Classroom Collaboration.

The teaching team shares its classroom experience and continuously builds its professional capital by replicating each other’s success.

With the teaching team, the instruction coach organises Lesson Practice sessions. Each session covers different techniques or practices that the instruction coach has recommended they focus on.

1. Introduction

The instruction coach Kirsty schedules a 30-minute Lesson Practice once a week for peer-to-peer lesson rehearsal. At the beginning of the session, Kirsty offers a 5-minute demonstration of the technique to practice this week. The session’s focus this week is leading effective routines and transitions.

2. Review

During the Lesson Practice, Kirsty notes a teacher called Ethan not providing motivating statements to those successfully completing routines and transitions. Kirsty highlights the absence of this part of the routine to Ethan. Kirsty practises a few routines with him and recommends he shadows her during a classroom observation of a teacher who has mastered their routines.

3. Resolve

Ethan observes their peer’s lesson and routines for fifteen minutes and records his notes in the Techniques Observation Form.

4. Reinspire

After the peer lesson observation, Kirsty and Ethan discuss their notes and how to implement the technique that week. Kirsty schedules an observation the next week to observe Ethan’s routines.  Kirsty notes that Ethan now performs the routine effectively.
