Coaching Community Engagement in

the Classroom

The instruction coach supports community engagement in the classroom through the cycle of Parent Classroom Engagement.

The teaching team engages parents to increase their commitment to improving students’ home and school life, so they are best placed to maximise the educational opportunity.

With the teaching team, the instruction coach organises Open Classroom Visits for parents to attend their child’s classroom. A schedule created by the coach and teacher outlines:

  • what days and sessions to visit
  • what parent participation is required
  • what this visit will achieve for their child.

1. Introduction

The instruction coach Nick assists teachers in scheduling parent classroom visits. When developing a classroom visiting schedule with a teacher called Jacqui, the teacher informs Nick of limited experience conducting parent classroom visits.

2. Review

Nick outlines the specific procedures to be completed during visits, including initial greetings, communicating guidelines for visitors and showcasing student work.

3. Resolve

Jacqui practises hosting classroom visitors with Nick, while he assigns the Schedule Parent Classroom Visits module to Jacqui to complete that week in preparation for hosting parents in the classroom the next week.

4. Reinspire

Nick notes to observe Jacqui’s parent visits the following week to review her implementation of the techniques. In that observation, Nick notes that Jacqui is effectively hosting parents in the classroom and notes to complete a mastery assessment of this technique later in the term.
