Yes-or-no questions with ‘Not’

statements corrections

The most common error in yes-or-no questions is students respond by telling what the object is, instead of what it is not. For example, ‘this is a car’ instead of ‘this is not a kite’.

The Process

  • The teacher says, ‘We’re talking about a kite. Is this a car?’ and signals (point-touch).
  •  The teacher says, ‘Let’s say the whole thing’, signals (point-touch) and answers with the students, ‘This is not a car’.
  • The teacher says, ‘All by yourselves’ and signals (point- touch), ‘Starting over’.

Model – My turn. This is not a car.

Lead – We’re talking about a kite. Is this a car? Let’s say the whole thing. This is not a car.

Test – All by yourselves. Is this a car? Say the whole thing.

Retest – Starting over.
