Time Requirements

RMSE 1 lessons are scheduled for every school day. Students are divided into small homogeneous groups.

RMSE 1 lessons consists of group oral language exercises and workbook exercises.

 Teacher timeStudent time
Group Instruction30 minutes per group 30 minutes per group
Independent Work – 20 minutes per group
 Work-check 20 minutes per group
Spelling (Lessons 50-160)10 minutes per group 10 minutes per group
  • Instruction is teacher directed.
  • Program guidelines are sixty-five minutes for each RMSE 1 group.
  • The sixty-five minutes are split as follows:
    • teacher directed word attack exercises, thirty minutes
    • student independent work, fifteen minutes
    • teacher checks student workbooks, five minutes
    • group spelling lesson, ten minutes.
  • It is crucial to allocate sixty-five minutes daily to RMSE 1. If less time is allotted the design of the program is compromised. Students do not get the daily repetition and cumulative review needed to progress through the program.
  • It is imperative to teach for the full timetabled time. If a lesson is completed and time remains, best practice is to begin the next lesson and then finish it the following day.
  • Always teach all parts of the RMSE 1 lesson. No parts should be skipped to speed up lesson progress.
