Expected Lesson Pacing

The goal is to complete one lesson to mastery each instructional day.

If a group is not at mastery, the teacher repeats the parts of a lesson students are struggling with until at least seventy five percent of the group is at mastery.

If the group is consistently not at mastery, the teacher works with the instruction coach to determine the problem.

The most common causes are:

  • The teacher is not teaching for the full timetabled time.
  • The daily schedule does not have recommended number of instructional minutes.
  • Inappropriate student behaviour is not being managed by the teacher.
  • There are frequent student absences.

The teacher can maximise instructional time and improve behaviour through additional technique training and more practice.

Prior to teaching, the teacher practises the lessons and prepares for each day to ensure lesson progression and mastery. This is the best way to know the lesson and what to expect during instruction.

Two concepts that impact lesson progression during teaching are pacing instruction and transitions.
