Correcting Errors Procedures

Errors can be made by students at any point in the lesson. Correct all errors immediately and in ways that help students achieve mastery.

In Corrective Mathematics during the number families’ facts introduction and practise exercises, errors can occur when students face difficulty saying all the words in the right order.

See the example from Subtraction, Lesson 11, Exercise 8 where students do not say the complete subtraction fact in Step C.

Students are stopped here, and their error is corrected. The model-lead-test-delayed test procedure is used here. The teacher,

  • (Models the answer): Listen. 7 minus 1 equals 6.
  • (Leads the students through the answer): Say it with me. 7 minus 1 equals 6.
  • (Tests students to ensure they can respond correctly): Your turn. Say the subtraction fact that minuses 1.
  • (Repeat the step): Say the subtraction fact that minuses 1.
  • (Delays Test by returning to the beginning of the exercise when students respond correctly on the test): Starting over.

The teacher repeats the correction procedure until the students respond with correct answers with no errors.
