Teaching Team Improve their Practice
and Teach to Mastery
Instruction coach Jacob schedules a demonstration lesson for teacher Isla on using engagement techniques. he teaches her Year 6 biology class and demonstrates the use of pair-share to mastery. Isla watches the recording of the lesson and makes notes on Jacob’s set up and delivery. In the next lesson, Isla implements what she has learned. When Jacob conducts a classroom observation, he assesses Isla’s use of pair-share and minimise transition time. Students clearly know the expectations and routine for completing the activity. He notes that students are actively engaged and have the opportunity to formulate their ideas and practise their responses before responding to Isla’s questions. When jacob evaluates the data, he notes that the improvement in Isla’s practice is reflrected in the data, with more students achieving mastery on their first attempt.
