Ava (teacher) is teaching a maths lesson on ‘symbol identification’. Ava is using a ‘point-touch signal’ in the lesson. She points to the ‘7’ in the first line. Ava gives the following instruction to the class, “Last time, you learned this number. Is this number six or seven?” She pauses to allow for ‘think-time’ and touches the 7. Students respond by saying, “seven”. Ava uses the ‘point-touch signal’ again. The students respond with “seven”. Ava then moves to Part B of the exercise, “Tell me the name of each thing as I touch it. Get ready”. She points to the first 7 and says, “Get ready”, then touches the 7. The students respond. Ava points to the ‘4’. “Get ready”, gives the signal and students give their answer, “four”. Ava repeats the process for the remaining symbols: Equals, 6, box, 7, 5 and 2. Students practise identifying the symbols.
