What happens when Technique is not Delivered with Fidelity

When teachers do not signal or do not signal properly, students do not know when to respond and are unable to respond. Some students may have understood the content but cannot communicate this, while others may not have understood the content and also cannot communicate this.
Without students responding, the teacher cannot determine whether the students have learned the content. Teachers do not have sufficient information to confidently assess that students are at mastery, so are unable to make informed decisions about their teaching.

What happens in this case:

The problem is compounded.

The teacher continues with the lesson, teaching new content without knowing if all the students have understood the past content.


Lessons are designed to build on knowledge throughout the lesson. Students who did not learn the content in the first part of the lesson will not understand the subsequent content taught in the lesson.

Gaps form in the students’ knowledge, and they struggle to complete independent work, leading to further gaps. When the teacher tests for understanding, these students are not at mastery. This means the teacher must either find time to reteach part or entire lessons to ensure that students are firm or move on to new lessons, meaning that these students never learn that particular knowledge.
