Students do not Actively Participate in the Lesson

When the teacher does not use signals effectively, it makes it difficult for students to actively participate in the lesson. Without a clear indication of when to respond to cues, they cannot answer as a group. The ineffective use of signals interrupts the pace and flow of the lesson.

What happens in this case:

The problem is compounded.

Students do not have a consistent routine to guide their participation. Students rely on the consistent timing of signals to know when to respond. When this timing is not consistent, students become confused and hesitant.

As a result, the levels of student interaction and active participation in their learning drops. Students become confused and less confident in following the teacher and responding to signals. They become disengaged from the lesson and off-task resulting in them distracting other students or disrupting the learning.

The overall amount and quality of learning also starts to diminish. Some students are not learning at all.
