The Teacher does not Use Data to Make Informed Decisions About Student Learning

When the teacher does not make informed decisions about student learning, they may be making decisions based on assumptions or feelings. Or, they may make decisions based on inaccurate information. With inaccurate information about which students are approaching mastery and what errors students are making, teachers are not able to change how they are teaching or what they are teaching to adjust and provide students with the necessary instruction.

The Problem is Compounded

  • Students do not become consistently firm in the lesson content and take longer to reach mastery.
  • Students to not make standard progress or catch up.
  • The teacher does not regularly examine data, paying attention to patterns of success and difficulty.
  • The teacher does not use data to inform instructional decisions about whether students can move on, be accelerated or what segments of lessons to repeat.
  • The teacher does not track student errors to see if students are consistently making errors on a particular skill and if several students are making the same error.
  • The teacher cannot immediately respond to students’ needs.
