What Happens when Positive Motivation Strategies are Provided with Fidelity

Effective teachers motivate students to learn, which enables them to persist longer, learn more deeply, produce higher quality work, and perform better in classes and on standardised tests. Teachers involve students in the learning process and mastery of goals. This creates a predictable environment in which students explicitly understand what they need to do to succeed.

When teachers use positive motivation strategies, they communicate to students the specific behaviours or skills that are important for learning, as well as how students are progressing towards the goal. This feedback helps students understand exactly what to continue doing and how. When students feel comfortable and confident in what they need to do, and that they are on track to achieve it, they see themselves as successful learners. Over time, the use of positive motivation strategies builds momentum in the classroom so that students and the teacher are working towards common goals.

When positive motivation strategies are used effectively, students:

  • are confident, engaged learners and have appropriate behaviour
  • are engaged and participating in lessons
  • celebrate positive outcomes.

Teachers

When teachers use positive motivation strategies, they:

  • contribute to building a high-expectations school
  • celebrate with students as lesson progression goals are met.
