Decimal values

Place-value conventions are applied to decimals values starting in lesson seventy-five.

The process is:

  • Display and say, ‘Here are circles that show 1, 1 tenth, one hundredth.’
  • Point to 1, ask, ‘What does this show?’ and signal. Affirm, ‘yes, one whole.’
  • Point to .1, ask, ‘What does this circle show?’ and signal. ‘How many of these shaded parts would you need to fill one whole circle?’ and signal. ‘Yes, you would need 10 parts.’
  • Point to .01, ask, ‘What does this circle show?’ and signal. ‘How many of these shaded parts would you need to fill one whole circle?’ signal. Affirm, ‘Yes you would need 100 parts.’
  • Ask, ‘If we had a circle with 1 thousandth shaded, how many parts would you need to fill one whole circle?’ and signal.
  • Display numbers, ask students to read the number and say the place-value addition for each number.
